Oliver Messel's early career in London was as a theatrical set designer, primarily for the ballet and opera stages. He moved to Barbados in the late 50's, wherein he became involved in the design and architectural modification
of island residences. Messel initially came to Mustique in 1969 to work on the hotel, but soon his influence was extended to the early villas on the island. His villas(thirteen in all) are still some of the most sought after vacation homes on the island.
